My Foolish Fellow Republicans

I am concerned about Huckabee’s surge in the polls. I fear that nominating a Baptist minister to be our president will be the death knell of our party and usher in a Democrat policy feast the likes we haven’t seen since Emperor Franklin Roosevelt. See one story on how we’ll lose HERE. You know, Romney may come from a religion that adheres to some pretty nutty ideas, but at least Romney the man is not a nutjob. Huckabee could be Mr. Peanut.

It saddens me to know that Americans don’t seem to care about an obviously backwards approach to family life, such as that wives should “submit” to their husbands. Mike Burkabee believes this strongly enough to sign a pledge in a national publication. A lot people are talking - see Andrew Sullivan’s blog.

Let’s be honest here, Huck is really just a friendlier Pat Robertson. We have lost our way, and while many of you evangelical Republicans might not think you want people like me in your party, you just may get your wish. Like the old gypsy curse, “may you get what you want.”

Given that Huckabee is fiscally a liberal, beyond his religion, the guy doesn’t offer very much.

One of CBB’s readers has recently suggested that Burkabee is the best person to “unite” the nation. A more absurd platitude I have never seen. It’s so funny how people can find a person who is just as myopic and project his own affinity on a huge pluralistic nation. INCREDIBLE!

If this keeps up, myself and tens of thousands of Republicans will be voting Ron Paul when he gets the Libertarian nomination. How will your united nation be then? President Hillary and VP Obama… or maybe vice versa. May you get what you want.

  3. Doug Says:

I agree, but fortunately I’m comforted by the fact that Huckabee’s the Howard Dean of the Republicans this year. He’s not going to get close to the nomination — and I make that brash prediction as a Detroit Lions fan who occasionally picks them to make the playoffs, which means nothing other than that I don’t take certainty lightly.

  4. Rick Says:

I like Ron Paul because he keeps it real. What ever happened to keepin’ it real?

  5. Nevadagirl Says:

I would vote for Romney no matter what religion he was. I believe he is the only candidate running who actually has the executive skills to do what he says he’ll do. How many politicians make promises, then actually fulfill them in office? After he became Governor, Romney had his aides go through and note down how many campaign promises he’d made. They noted 92 or 93. They rounded this up to an even 100 and publicized the list. By the time he ended his term as Governor, he had completed all 100 items on his list, as well as others. All of these politicians promise great things, but you have to ask - who actually has been tested and proven in the fire (remember, Mitt had to work with Ted Kennedy and the rest of the democrats in Mass. to achieve these goals) to show results? Important to note, that all of Mitt’s accomplishments in his state were victories for conservatives - his record shows consistently conservative decisions. If I had a 2nd choice, it would be Rudy, as I believe he is the only other one that approaches Mitt’s ability to achieve results. Rudy is just too far off the important conservative issues for me. Ron Paul might be “real” and Mike the master of quips, but it takes a lot more to be the leader of the free world. I’m for Mitt - all the way.

  6. Jeff Fuller Says:

I’m very much a believer in following Christ’s example and his teachings . . but Huckabee is disturbing, to say the least, on so many levels.

  7. darenjaques Says:

I appreciate the comment, Nevadagirl, but something in there doesn’t make sense. They “rounded up to 100″ ?? How do you round promises up? Sounds to me like they made up some more stuff to make it a nice even number. I’ll also bet there’s quite a bit of spin on whether all 100 were actually fulfilled.

  8. Dorf Says:

Ron Paul said he was 99.9% sure he will not run as a third party on CNN the other day after the debate. He seemed pretty sincere about that. He said the system is so biased against 3rd parties that is just a waste of time and energy.

    Stupid 2 party system.

If Huckabee is the nominee, I will vote for the other party… even if it is Hillary,. (Ugg, please don’t let it be.) His record on tax cuts and the pardoning of murders is enough to turn me off. He could be the veep and I would be OK with that.

Well, that person was me, and I stand by it. People, he CUT taxes in a state that was 80% Democrat. He got both sides together and moved things along. Do you see someone like Hillary doing that? Don’t think so.

But go ahead and vote for Hillary. She’ll love you for it.

  10. Dorf Says:

Nope, I take it back. I wouldn’t vote for Hillary never ever ever. Saying that was uncalled for and I apologize. I still will not vote for the Huckster. If its the Huckster vs. Hillary… Xenu help us!

I’m sick of elections only giving me two choices, especially when the two choices are a giant douche or a turd sandwich. Every election, every year it’s the same thing.. Douche or Turd 2006.. Douche or Turd 2007.. Every year I hope for something better, but it will probably be Douche or Turd 2008.

All praise Xenu dictator of the Galactic Confederacy, and the only being who can unite us all!

  11. darenjaques Says:

I’m feeling you Dorf… BTW: in a Hillary vs. Huckster race which one is the giant douche and which is the turd sandwich?

  12. EW Says:

Over at The Atlantic, Matt Yglesias noted how difficult it will be for senators like Norm Coleman (MN), Gordon Smith (OR), and Susan Collins (ME) to run with Huckabee on the ticket. Yglesias is happy about that. Republicans shouldn’t be.

It’s a very smart post distinguishing between a southern strategy and a southern party.

Evangelicals like Huckabee haven’t realized that while they can put a party over the top, they can’t be a national party. It’s bad politics; they don’t have the votes. It’s bad policy; duh.

  13. Jeremie Jordan Says:

“Where Wives are Free to NOT Submit to their Husbands”

While wives are free not to submit to their husbands, it should be noted that this blogger does not however discourage a little submission…if you know what I am sayin’.

  14. BGunzy Says:

It’s funny you had to doctor a picture of Huckabee to make him look like Mr Peanut…Rudy’s photo doesn’t need Photoshopping to attain the same image. I swear, the guy looks like he should be tapdancing on a can of Planters to Poco’s “Putting On The Ritz”.

  15. Sonda Says:

Boy oh boy, politicians can’t win. You make fun of them if they are not good looking and you make fun of them if they have great helmet hair.

  16. Sonda Says:

On a serious note, I do consider Jeremie to be the leader of our family. I can get very emotional and unreasonable at times and Jeremie is very level headed. I like this biblical teaching, I just think “submission” is misunderstood. I am glad Huckabee is a christian man, but I would not vote for him just because we are both christians. Honestly, did anyone see him during the debates? He should not win the republican nomination!

  17. darenjaques Says:

Sonda, I don’t doubt that my own wife would echo your sentiments on household leadership, but just because your household and my household work that way, doesn’t mean that’s the way it is SUPPOSED to be. Isn’t it acceptable for a man and woman to be co-equals? Or for a woman to be the “leader”? I sure think so.

  18. Sonda Says:

Daren, I know that there are households that have unequal leadership or that the woman is the leader. I have also heard all the “that woman wears the pants in the family”, “10% angel, 90% B***h”, and other man bashing jokes. I have seen what happens to Jeremie when I squash him, and lets just say I am a lot happier if I don’t. People can do and believe as they please. I am just doing what makes me and my family happy. I want to ask if you think “co-equals” means that men think, feel, and act the same as women?
