Olympic Games 2008 in Begging

Posted by Jeremie Jordan on April 9, 2008

We’ve spent months listening to Hillary drone on ad nauseam about her vast diplomatic experience. The type of experience that supposedly separates her from Obama and makes her ready to lead on day one when the phone rings at three A.M. (don’t envision what Hillary would look like at 3 A.M., don’t do it). Drawing on that deep of well of experience Hillary believes the way to combat Chinese disregard for human rights in Tibet and Darfur is to boycott the opening of the Olympic games.

The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership. These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government.

That’s some heavy shit.  Imagine the message the United States would send to Beijing if President Bush doesn’t show up for the opening of the games.  Hell I would be surprised if an absent Bush didn’t cause the Chinese to grant Tibet sovereignty (and Hong Kong for good measure) just in the hope that Bush might still be able to make the final fireworks display.  Can the Olympics even begin if the leader of the supposed most hated nation on the planet doesn’t attend the initial pageantry?

Lets do something meaningful to stop the suffering in Darfur and Tibet.  Watch as we put down our streamers, confetti and glitter in defiance.  Don’t make America have to silence our noise makers.  China, you are on notice.  Saddam told America where we could blow our kazoos from…once.  Only once (alright, alright, maybe twice).  Party’s over bi-otches, we’re staying home for one extra day.
