Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Posted by Jeremie Jordan on May 19, 2008

I want this movie not to suck, but I’ve seen the Star Wars prequels and Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (or to be honest I’ve tired watching War of the Worlds). The only reason I believe there’s a chance the new Indy film will be ‘good’ is because of the casting of Shia LaBeouf. He single handedly made the new Transformers movie not lame. With a little luck this won’t be a new ‘Temple of Doom.’

Talking about new Indiana Jones with my wife while watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, we started reminiscing about the movies we most vividly recall seeing in the theater during childhood. Here are mine and why, feel free to post yours.

  • Young Guns II and Nightmare on Elm Street 4: these two movies I actually remember seeing with Jaques. Young Guns II was on Daren’s birthday and Elm Street 4 (it might have been 5) we had my mom buy the tickets for us while she went to another movie. The movie sucked, but it was my first time seeing a horror movie in the theater. ‘Rick you little meatball’
  • Back to the Future (twice)
  • Return of the Jedi - true disclosure, I also saw all the prequels in the theater. God how I wanted them to not to suck as bad as they did. Yet, here I am again about to give George Lucas more of my money. Curse you Lucas for praying on my fond childhood memories.
  • Home Alone - I had returned to Iowa from Houston on winter break and I saw this one with my cousin Andy. At the time I had really long hair which was draped over my chair as we sat in the front of the theater because it was packed. In the middle of the previews a teen a little younger than me and seated behind us turned to his friend and said ‘if my brother was here right now he would cut that guy’s hair.’ This prompted me to say while calming watching the previews and never turning around ‘if your brother was here right now I would kick his ass.’ It was a much more peaceful movie after that. Andy laughed for quite awhile about that one.
  • Smokey and the Bandit - East bound and down. Jackie Gleason was kind enough to teach a 4-5 year Jeremie old how to properly use swear words.
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - in between having my friend Josh talking to me while I was watching the film, I really enjoyed it.
  • Footloose - I saw this with a friend who about 2-3 years older than I was at the time. I am pretty sure I was still in elementary school, he on the other hand was in junior high. We spent the walk home after the movie dance fighting in the streets. I still feel embarrassed for him. Not me, just for him.

It got a good reception at Cannes, so that’s a good thing. (For example the DeVinci Code was crushed at Cannes)

I just want a fun Indy movie. I usually wait for the Rotten Tomatoes score before I make my go/no-go call, but for Indy I’m going no matter what.

I remember seeing the first Honey I Shrunk the Kids in Kansas City with my cousin and we thought the oldest boy lead in the movie looked like Ozzie Osborn and the girl lead looked like Debbie Gibson.

Ah yes… I remember all those well. Two of my favs to see at the theater that I recall from my younger days were The Terminator and Beverly Hills Cop. I distinctly remember seeing Stripes with my sister when I was about 14, and then leaving the theater and sneaking back in for another run of the movie. Ah the good old days.

it seems like the recipe of a good Indiana Jones film would be 1 part Nazis and 1 part biblical artifact… the Soviet army does a pretty good job of replacing the Nazis, but the other ingredient…
