Iowa Chops
Posted by Jeremie Jordan on July 13, 2008
I am not a huge hockey like Jaques, but I’ve gone to quite a few Iowa Stars games in the last few years. I enjoy the AHL level of hockey and was disappointed to here that the Dallas Stars were pulling their affiliation with our Iowa franchise. However I have to be honest, I really like the new nickname and logo to go with our new team which is associated with the Anaheim Ducks.
What’s the feelings of the CBB readers? You like it? Hate it? Don’t care?

HOW EMBARRASSING!!!!! Ducks and Ham “the other white meat.” Who did you play for in the AHL. Uh, well, uh I played for the Chops. And I repeat, how embarrassing.

I guess I don’t see the embarrassment. For starters the parent club is the Ducks so in comparison the Chops sound pretty damn good. Besides the pig looks pissed and mean. I like it.
I see the Chops as no different than teams like: Lakers, Jazz, Mets or Texans (albeit the Lakers and Jazz no longer apply). The name is meant to provide a connection to the state or city the team is located in. The Stars? Yawn. I liked the Stars as a team, but the name did nothing for me.
I plan on buying a Chops shirt. I saw one today and almost bought it but picked up a Drake MVC champions shirt instead.

And you are probably a better person for it. (LOL)
I’m just afraid that competitors will be oinking at them and calling them little pigs, etc. So, whatever floats your boat. I personally prefer Texas Stars. Not real original but then competitors can only sing Twinkle, Twinkle.

Sorry, Jordan. I gotta part with you on this one. HATE IT. I do like the logo - that’s a pissed off piggy, but CHOPS? A chop is your dinner, not your mascot.

I can picture being at a game drunk and yelling, “Give them the other white meat!!!”

The top two choices were the Chops and Thunder. Thunder? Might as well call them the Tigers or Eagles or any other generic name.
A few great points from Sound Off last night made by Andy Fales:
-Where were all the people who hated this name during the selection process? The Chops won 2 fan voting polls (with the Thunder coming second)
-There has been more talk about the AHL team in the last three days than there was about the Stars in the entire time they were in DSM.
-And we can’t be the laughingstock of the AHL for our nickname because we made the joke first. People need to learn the Iowa (despite the best intentions of the Register) is just a farming state. Period. We can’t be ‘hicks’ just because we chose the name ‘Chops,’ we were hicks long before that and will be hicks long after the Chops are gone. It shows we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Behind the Barnstormers, I think the Chops is one of best nicknames in last two decades or so for a new Iowa team.

Jordan, I’m a former Iowa Stars Season ticket holder, and remain on the mailing list, and I was NEVER contacted regarding either fan poll, nor did I receive anything by mail for my choices in a team name.
I would’ve named the team the Harvesters or the Reapers and have a black robed dude with a scythe as the mascot/logo. That would be AWESOME!

I’m not really qualified to judge logos and mascots, because I live in the shadow of the Lansing Lugnuts: http://www.lansinglugnuts.com/
My view of sports logo and mascot quality is therefore distorted.
I do think it’s time for another hockey movie though. How about one based in Iowa? “Rink of Dreams”… it’ll be a hit.
It’d be great if they put that pig on skates and sent it out onto the ice between periods. Hell, I’d go to the games then.

Iowa would get a lot more respect if our pigs had large tusks.

I like the Harvesters….
Maybe the fan polls were skewed, I don’t know. However the poll from last nights Sound Off showed like 47% hated the name but the rest either loved it or didn’t care. So in the end it will probably be ok. If they can identify with Iowa fans and create a base in 5 years no one will care we are called the Chops.

I like the name “Chops”. I think it’s funny! I can not wait for Jeremie to get a tee shirt so I can start calling him Pork Chop. The Trilogy nick name is getting old.

Jeremie - First, I don’t think they would take my vote because I am in Dallas and will, of course, be a Texas Star fan.
Second - I’m not so certain that very many of the female fans are going to want to identify with a pig, ham, chop, etc and I know I wouldn’t want to wear a pig on the front of my shirt.
Actually, I like the Harvesters as well. Anyway, good luck with the Ducks!

I would have picked the Iowa Corn Stalkers!
